When you think of a doll, the first thing that probably comes to mind is playing with one as a young child. Dolls offer little girls and boys their first opportunity to feel what it's like to be a caregiver. Children that show love and affection to dolls and other toys when they are young are more likely to become attentive parents and kind adults.

While dolls are a wonderful toy for children because it teaches them responsibility and encourages them to use their imagination, they are also equally as beneficial for adults. Women that have lost a child due to miscarriage, still birth, or another tragedy often benefit emotionally from having a lifelike doll- also referred to as a reborn doll- to care for. Reborn dolls are even used with patients that suffer from dementia because it helps to give them a sense of purpose.

The History of Reborn Dolls

These lifelike versions of the traditional toy doll have been around since the early 1990s. Collectors and artisans desired more realistic-looking dolls for their hobby and began using vinyl material to create them for its softer texture. Most reborn dolls are hand-painted and take hours to craft. It's truly an art form- one where the doll artists are referred to as reborners.

Reborn Dolls and Infant Loss

Mothers that have suffered the tragic loss of a child are left with a void in their lives that can never be filled. One way some mothers have learned to cope with this loss is by caring for a reborn doll. The act of dressing the doll, holding the doll, and even taking the doll with them while they run errands can assist in the grieving process. While the doll never replaces the child they loss, it does bring a sense of comfort to those that have experienced such devastation.

Benefits for Dementia and Elderly Patients

Reborn dolls are increasingly being used in nursing homes and assisted living facilities where many residents suffer from dementia. This form of doll therapy can give seniors a feeling of purpose while also invoking fond memories of their childhood.

While reborn dolls offer many health benefits, they also make a great toy for children. There are many realistic styles to choose from on our site that are perfect for avid doll collectors, young children, or adults with specific emotional needs.
