It's officially fall and you know what that means- it's time to break out the cold weather gear. Coats, gloves, scarves, boots, and hats are all essential accessories to keep you warm while you endure those frigid temps. One of the best types of hats to wear during fall, winter, and early spring is the beanie. There are multiple ways to wear this cold-weather classic so that you're both stylish and warm.

Skull Cap Vs. Beanie

A beanie is a hat made from a soft material such as fleece, cotton, or wool. The fabric is either knitted or sewn together to keep the entire top of the head warm. Some fabric is left over at the top so that the extra fabric falls backward, towards to neck. This allows for a more relaxed look and feel.

A skull cap is tighter, similar to a swim cap, but made with warmer fabric. Because the skull cap is tight, it fits close to the head and does not have any excess fabric at the top. Skull caps are ideal for those working outside in the cold temperatures because no frigid air is allowed to flow through the top of the hat, leaving your head warmer.

Wearing A Beanie

The way you wear a beanie depends on how much hair you have and your style goals while you're wearing it. Men with little to no hair can simply place the beanie on and go. Men with longer hair may want to tie their hair back into a ponytail before placing the beanie on their head.

Women with varying hair lengths have multiple options to choose from. You can either wear your hair down and put the beanie on top, or style your hair into a cute braid, ponytail, or other updo. Whatever hairstyle you choose, make sure it sits below the bottom of the beanie to avoid a strange look at the top.

For women that like to rock the "mom bun", there are even beanies available with a whole at the top where you can slide your bun through. You can achieve this look with a traditional beanie by cutting a whole in the fabric at the top of the beanie for the bun or ponytail to go.
