If the winter weather is starting to take a toll on you, then you may want to consider getting away to a tropical paradise for a few days. While there are many places that you can get away to that cost a lot, there are some very inexpensive choices available.
Corfu, Greece Called the Grand Lady of the Ionian Islands, Corfu has a lot to offer travelers including sandy beaches. Legend says that if you swim in Canal d'Amour, then you will find your soulmate. Pastitsada, sofrito and bourdeto are just a few of the wonderful foods you will want to sample.
Algarve, Portugal This sun-soaked Southern sliver of Europe is a great place to soak in the sun. There are more than 150 beaches to enjoy in the area. With nearly 3,000 hours of sunshine annually, it is a great place to work on your tan. Octopus is a favorite food here, and it is relatively inexpensive at many locations.
Phuket, Thailand While most of the resorts near the beaches in Phuket are relatively expensive, there are cheaper places to stay within walking distance of the beaches. This is a wonderful place to explore by kayak. This southern province of Thailand also offers amazing rum made at local distilleries. For a unique cultural experience, try dining on local fruit purchased at the night market.
Phu Quoc, Vietnam Made up of 23 islands, the Phu Quoc, Vietnam, region may be the best paradise you have never heard of visiting. You can move between the two largest islands by riding a cable car giving you a unique view of the water below. While the area is getting several affordable luxury hotels, there are many hostels to stay in. Diving is a popular pastime here with 103 varieties of coral in the waters just offshore. Try the local crab and lobster.
Playa Grande, Costa Rica Watch leatherback turtles nest while visiting Playa Grande, Costa Rica. This community has great surfing conditions most of the time. Canoe through the Rio Matapalo Estuary to see amazing birdlife including beautiful scarlet macaws. Take a hike in the Palo Verde National Park where you can see several species of monkeys. Do not leave this piece of paradise without sampling the vast variety of rice dishes.
Little Corn Island, Nicaragua If you enjoy seeing unspoiled beauty, then put Little Corn Island, Nicaragua, on your winter travel itinerary. Nothing motorized, including golf carts, are permitted on this island that is only accessible by ferry. Sailboats are a popular way to see the surrounding area. Participate in yoga classes in natural jungle surroundings. Sample the unique coconuts that grow only in this location along with the fish that are caught daily in surrounding waters.
Whichever tropical vacation you choose, do not forget to pack
your underwater camera,
your sunglasses and
your swimsuit. In fact, now would be a perfect time to shop for them.
