When most of us think of backpacks, images of text books and pencil boxes might come to mind. A backpack is something we've all had at some point. They're the easiest way to transport the necessities to and from school each day, but even our ancestors used some form of backpack to carry their items hundreds of years ago.

Although the first zippered backpack wasn't invented until 1938 by a company called Gerry Outdoors, people were wrapping items in various types of material like cloth and strapping it to their backs many years before that. Not until the late 1960s did the backpack see a surge in popularity with the development of companies like JanSport. After that, more companies saw the high demand for backpacks and decided to join in on the fun.

Backpacks and the fashion world didn't really collide until much later, when big names like Givenchy, Fendi, and Prada started coming out with luxury-styled backpacks. Made from deluxe materials like leather and silk, these backpacks were popular with the rich and famous around the world. The late 1990s and early 2000s saw a surge in backpack popularity with trendsetters like the Spice Girls and Alicia Silverstone sporting mini versions of the satchels in music videos and movies.

For the next two decades, backpacks were mainly used by school-aged children, busy moms, and hikers. Fashion designers instead focused on handbags and the backpack took center stage to a variety of other bag designs.

Like any other fashion trend, the backpack was patiently waiting for its return to the spotlight. Its time finally came during 2019's New York Fashion Week. Designers like Givenchy and Prada again debuted unique backpacks on the runway. One particularly notable design from Givenchy is the bow backpack, which is a luxurious backpack adorned with a large bow design- perfect for a night on the town.

With warmer weather coming, the backpack is going to be the ideal bag for taking a trip to the beach, venturing out to the park, or brunching on Sundays with friends. There are so many styles and sizes to choose from- florals, sequined, leather, denim- choosing just one might seem like an impossible task. Luckily, there are a variety of durable, fashionable, and affordable backpacks available for purchase right on our website- so you can buy several and have them on hand for every day use and special events.
